REPORT TO CACSSA AGM 8 June 2009

THE SKITTLES CLUB

Although there are still concerns about possible decreasing membership the Skittles Club has remained viable with some interesting competitions having taken place during the past year.

The Chairman resigned at our AGM, for strong personal reasons, but, discovering on his re-appearance in the New Year that no successor had emerged, expressed his willingness to return to office and was duly co-opted back onto the Committee. During his absence the Club was ably run by the Fixtures Secretary (Brian Wood), the Treasurer (Richard Morris) and the Scorer (Patrick Phair). The Stickers Organiser (Gary Lusty) has also resumed office and Hayley Roberts has now joined the Committee as Secretary, thus re-establishing a full Committee.

Although the number of teams in our Summer League decreased to 8, a close contest was fought with A-Bombs beating Newcomers, who had topped the round-robin table, in the Final game. On the same night the A-Bombs beat Muffinmen to win the John Christie Chairman’s Cup. The awards for the Summer competition were presented by David Maconochie (CACSSA Vice-Chairman).

The Winter League retained all 10 teams from the previous season, the top Honours being shared, Muffinmen comfortably winning the League and A-Bombs the President’s Shield (knockout). The play-off for the Wooden Spoon produced a unique 5-team contest with Fiends emerging victorious.

To round off the Winter season we managed to run another ‘Festival of Skittles’ on three successive evenings, but this is unlikely to be repeated, especially if the Cheltenham League season has not been completed, as a number of people expressed their regrets in not being able to attend because of commitment to their teams.

It began with the Mixed Pairs competition but, although the number of entries was down, produced an enjoyable, and busy, evening for everyone, each pair playing a minimum of 6 games. The eventual winners were Kate and Andy Spence.

On the following evening the number of entries for the Player-of-the-Year competition was also down on previous years but, as always, produced some exciting matches, particularly in the Final which was the only match to be tied after normal play. The winner after an extra hand was Jamie Bennett.

On the third evening the Final game for the President’s Shield and that for the Wooden Spoon were played and awards then presented by Hugh Barton (CACSSA manager).

The full lists of awards for both Summer and Winter seasons are accessible on our websites (cacssa.co.uk/skittles and gcweb) and also displayed in the Skittles area in the Geoff Hardy Room.

We used the clubhouse skittles alleys 137 times during the year. Support from CACSSA officials and Staff has been exemplary, as always, and we particularly appreciated the hard work put in by CACSSA Staff who agreed to provide three alleys on each Festival evening, even though these had to be taken up for daytime activities and then re-constructed.

Ideas for new competitions are under consideration, including outdoor skittles and a front-pin competition. Efforts continue to attract more members.

We remain financially sound. Our current position and likely prospects for the future will be discussed at our A.G.M. in early July after which our Treasurer, Richard Morris, will provide our accounts to CACSSA.

After the Winter season ended we were saddened by the death of Tony Clay, Chairman of the Club for 10 years (1996-2006). He will be remembered for his strenuous efforts to maintain the viability of the Club. A new competition is being considered and his family have agreed that the Winners’ trophy will be awarded in Tony’s name.
