CHELTENHAM CIVIL SERVICE SKITTLES CLUB
Annual General Meeting 2005
MINUTES of the meeting held 19 July 2005, 19:30 at the Civil Service Sports Club, Tewkesbury Road, Cheltenham.
PRESENT : Tony Clay (Chairman), Reg Rowley (Treasurer), Patrick Phair (Scorekeeper), Brian Wood (Fixtures’ Secretary), and representatives from the A‑Bombs and X-tracts.
Apologies received from Dirty Dozen
MINUTES of 2004 AGM
Read and accepted as a correct record.
Actions Arising:
- The Little John’s Bogus Journey had joined our Winter League;
- There had been no progress in identifying alternative ways of raising money for charity.
- Healthier finances allowed us to purchase two new sets of balls and pins, and to make the Player of the Year competition more attractive by waiving entrance fees, offering free suppers and awarding better quality trophies.
- 3 sets of new pins and balls have been purchased. These will be protected for skittles club use only. One set of old pins and balls to be sold;
- Stickers were now more reliable and there had been few problems this year. Captains are not letting the Manager know of any problems. Reg Rowley noted that we should not expect the Clubhouse to organise the team of stickers when it comes under new management.
- The election of officers was deferred;
- Discussion of the points system was deferred.
CHAIRMAN’S REPORT
Expressed disappointment at the turnout for the AGM and asked whether reminders had been issued in time; Patrick thought he had left it a bit late.
Highlights of the year included a dream Player of the Year final, in which Bill Leach just edged out Tim Masling to become champion for a third time and the only player to have won the competition more than once
We also had a successful Finals Night on 17 June when Odds and Ends defeated SAS in the final of the President’s Shield. The match was marred by some ill-feeling arising from gamesmanship and an aggressive response. The meeting agreed that team captains should seek to defuse incidents like this, involving the Committee should differences be irreconcilable otherwise.
Malcolm King reported that the Cheltenham League had held their finals at Tewkesbury Road. This was a profitable arrangement for all concerned, and they had asked for a 5 year tenure which was now agreed subject to timings. In 2006 they will use the alleys in the periods 10 to 29 April and 8 to 27 May. The Cheltenham League have paid half of the cost of installing CCTV cameras.
TREASURER’S REPORT
Reg Rowley submitted a detailed break-down of income and expenditure, and declared that the Club’s finances were generally satisfactory. The withdrawing of the donations to the charities was offset by the purchase of 3 sets of pins and balls (£715). Our cash at the bank is £2502.43. His report was accepted by the Meeting.
Reg added that the Yorkshire bank advise they are closing their Cheltenham branch and had invited us to move our account to Gloucester. We would review this when the new Treasurer is elected.
SCOREKEEPER’S REPORT
The scorekeeper said he was pleased the score cards were coming in regularly. He tries to come to the clubhouse to collect them regularly.
The Scorekeeper was congratulated on the accurate record keeping and timely publication of results, tables and averages.
FIXTURES REPORT
The fixtures secretary was again pleased to note all the games had been played, albeit with 8 rearragements.
We were able to schedule all the league games for the 13 winter teams before the Cheltenham League used our alleys for the final rounds of their competitions. This meant the President’s Shield games and Player of the Year did not get under way until late May
We were unclear how many teams would be entering the Winter League. The Fixtures Secretary was to find out as soon as possible.
Action: Fixtures Secretary
EQUIPMENT
It was agreed that the new sets of pins and balls should be reserved for skittles club use. One spare set would be made available for general use. It was agreed that Gerry Chivers could purchase another spare set.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS
Reg Rowley resigned as Treasurer as he notified us at last year’s AGM. No nominations for a replacement were forthcoming. The committee would talk to Team Captains and approach individuals. The remaining officers will continue to serve.
Action: Committee
Reg also gave one year’s notice of resigning as Sticker’s Secretary.
AOB
The experiment with awarding points for winning legs as well as games will not be used in the Winter League. The principle was agreed for next Summer League.
There being no other business, the meeting closed at 21:30.
