National Skittles
Report of the 2010 National Skittles Final
The Civil Service National Skittles Finals have once again been held at
the CACSSA Clubhouse, with 5 regions competing (Scotland, Northern Ireland,
North West, Midlands and South West – South and Wales had to drop out).
The competition was won by the “Bath Bristols” from the South West
Region, who had only narrowly beaten the Cheltenham ‘Y’ team in the last
game of the Regional Finals.
Trophies were presented by Pete Fischer the CSSC Vice Chairman.
Admiration was expressed for the stickers-up (provided by the Skittles
Club) who toiled on a very hot day and kept up with play exceptionally well.

MUFFIN MEN are the
undisputed top team in the Civil Service Skittles Club, having won both the
major competitions – League and Knock-out.
The League competition developed into a two-horse race between them and
Strongbows but the Championship was effectively achieved when Muffin Men
convincingly beat their rivals for the second time.
There was tight competition at the other end, also, with Pensioners
edging out Fiends in their final meeting. These two teams also
met on Finals Night, to compete for the Wooden Spoon, and Fiends retained
the trophy by winning by 1 pin (350-349, nine players).

In the Final game of the knock-out competition for the
President’s Shield
Muffin Men met the holders, A-Bombs. After a
level first half the victors stormed ahead to win by 39 pins (504 – 465)
Trophies were presented to the winning and running-up teams in both
competitions by David Wilson, Vice-President of the Civil Service Sports
Association, as he did to individual winners.

For the first time for many years the Cheltenham Area Association sent
two teams to Bristol for the South-West Regional Finals which are part of
the CSSC National Skittles Competition. Both teams acquitted
themselves well, especially the recently-formed “Y” team (for Youth) under
the leadership of John Harper. This team narrowly missed becoming
Regional Champions by losing the very last game to the eventual winners, a
Bath/Bristol outfit, by 2 pins! The event was run as a round-robin,
shortened to 4 hands per match.

Tim Masling is the Skittles Club's Player-of-the-Year. He not only
denied last year's champion, Jamie Bennett, of a repeat of his achievement
in the Final game but had to beat his own son, Matt, in the semi-final.
Tim thus became only the second player to have won this competition more
than once since its inception in 1995, and did so with the highest score of
the whole competition in the Final.

Jamie and Tim before their final game
32 Players contested the competition and, with three alleys in use, an
evening of intensive activity was engrossing and highly enjoyable, even for
those who were knocked-out early.
Semi-finals: Tim Masling 38 - 36 Matt Masling
Jamie Bennett 44 - 43 Patrick Phair
Final: Tim 55 - 39 Jamie

The victors in the fourth running of the Skittles Mixed Pairs
Competition, held on 8th March, were those stalwart members of the Bar
Staff, Kat Livie and Phil Lewis. All ten pairs played four
games in the Group stage, providing some keen competition. Kat and
Phil won their Group and then their semi-final against their Group's
runners-up. Yvonne and Charlie Mills, as runners-up in
their Group, reached the Final by revenging themselves on their
Group winners in their semi-final

The inaugural competition for the Tony Clay Memorial Shield, donated by
Tony's family, has been hailed a great success by the participants,
especially on the final night when many games ended in close finishes. The
prospect of playing under Front-pin Rules may have been daunting for some
before the competition started but many surprised themselves with their
performances and everybody had a lot of fun.

Scott Castle receives the
Tony Clay Memorial Shield
from Mark Clay |
The winner was Scott Castle who just edged past Charlie Mills. Both were
presented with retention shields by Mark Clay, Tony's son, and Scott
received the Memorial Shield to hold until the next event, which will almost
certainly feature as a pre-Christmas celebration during the League break.
Tony's family also donated cash which was converted into Club vouchers
(redeemable across the Bar for drinks or food), each player who had won two
games receiving one voucher and then another for each game subsequently won.
Others were presented to players for significant performances or as
consolation prizes.
Main prizes:
Highest score, gent: Scott Castle 48 (in his
first game!)
Highest score, lady: Sue Larkins 42
Best spare: Bob Wilks 16.
Highest first-round losing score, gent: Jamie Bennett 39
Highest first-round losing score, lady: Hanne Haydock 37
Further
details can be found on the Skittles Club website.
The Skittles Club acknowledges the generosity of Tony's family and hopes
that this competition will have gone someway to ease their bereavement by
demonstrating the affection in which he was held within the Club.
